Long Pine Needles

These are the hard to find and wonderful long pine needles, from the Long Leaf Pine tree (Pinus Palustris). Harvested at the peak of the season, they average 11 inches long. These have been hand selected and dried; they are high quality for use in basketry or gourd rims. This is a bundle of approximately four ounces.

Store these indefinitely in a reasonably temperate climate (in a closet in the house is fine); then when you are ready to weave with them, weave as you would with any other fiber. I have seen a number of beautiful baskets created with pine needles; here is an example of a gourd rim woven with these:
